As someone who strives for excellence in both motherhood and business, learning to let go of control hasn’t always come easily. Like many, I’ve spent years believing that maintaining control meant ensuring success, whether it was organizing every aspect of my children’s lives or micromanaging business projects to guarantee a perfect outcome. However, over time, I’ve learned that perfection is an illusion, and trying to control every detail only leads to frustration and burnout. Letting go, I’ve realized, doesn’t mean giving up—it means trusting the process and accepting that imperfection is part of growth.
In both motherhood and business, embracing imperfection has become a valuable lesson. With my children, I’ve had to learn that I can’t always control their decisions or the outcomes of their efforts, but I can guide and support them through it. The same applies to my professional life. I’ve found that delegating and trusting others to take ownership of their roles not only lightens my load but also empowers those around me. Allowing space for others to step in—whether it’s a team member at work or my children taking on more responsibility—has been a game-changer.
By releasing control, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of imperfection. It’s in those imperfect moments where true growth happens. Mistakes become opportunities to learn, and flexibility allows for creativity and problem-solving. Whether it’s in the way my children navigate life or how my business evolves, I now see that letting go is not a weakness, but a strength. It’s about trusting yourself, your team, and the process, knowing that growth often comes from the things you can’t plan or control.
Here are three things I consciously practice to avoid being overwhelmed:
Delegate and Trust: Start small by delegating tasks, whether at home or in your business, and trust that others will handle them effectively. Allow your team or family members to take ownership, which not only lightens your load but also helps them grow in responsibility and confidence.
Reframe Mistakes as Learning Opportunities: Shift your mindset by viewing mistakes or imperfections as valuable learning experiences. Instead of focusing on what went wrong, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” This practice helps you embrace imperfection and promotes a growth-oriented mindset.
Practice Mindfulness and Patience: When you feel the urge to control every detail, take a step back and practice mindfulness. Breathe deeply and remind yourself that not everything requires your immediate intervention. Over time, this patience will help you become more flexible and less stressed when things don’t go exactly as planned.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with everything on your plate right now, I sincerely hope you take a moment to learn to let go and rest. You can’t be the best version of yourself as a mother, businesswoman, or leader if you’re spread too thin. Embrace the imperfections, trust the process, and remember that sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is to simply let go.
